‘From Mountain to Sea’ is Aberdeenshire’s unique response to Scotland’s Covid Memorial Programme, part of a national programme across 32 local authority areas funded by the Scottish Government in a partnership with Greenspace Scotland.
It started with the appointment of socially engaged artist, Claudia Zeiske, who combined walks and talks across villages and towns as she literally took the Council’s strapline for a walk. These activities brought people together and allowed them to speak freely about their memories and sorrows around their Covid experiences.
Collectively these residents and their stories helped to co-curate and shape the project as a key theme of hope and healing emerged.
The next stage of the project saw Claudia joined by craftsman and furniture maker, Chris Nangle, and Aberdeenshire musician and fiddler, Paul Anderson. Film maker, Paul Campbell, came on board too.
Our communities across Aberdeenhire have worked alongside our creative team to help shape what has become a new walking route from its highest point at Ben Macdui to the most easterly place at the coastal town of Peterhead. Creative markers, or memorials, along the way in the form of new bespoke seating and an album of tunes help connect and bring people and places together.
It took considerable effort to bring all these creative works together. Collectively, they now stand as a symbol of hope and healing for all Aberdeenshire.
